It’s week two of CAA's Worst Roads and the votes are steadily coming in for Saskatchewan’s worst or unsafe roads for all road users including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, transit users, and drivers.

Here are the current CAA 2022 Top Ten Worst Roads. It’s an interesting list with a total of 30 municipal roads and highways nominated.

New to this year’s campaign, are updates and reports on a few previous CAA Worst Roads from roving reporter Dale Edward Johnson. Since the April 6th start of this year’s campaign, Johnson has reported from Regina’s Grant Drive and Highway 33, near Kronau, Saskatchewan. Today, Johnson’s report is from Regina’s 8th Avenue North which was #2 in last year’s CAA Worst Roads Top Ten and is currently tied in 8th place. During the week, Johnson will report from Canora with an update on Saskatchewan Highway #9 which was in a 3-way tie for #10 placement in the 2021 CAA Worst Roads. Johnson’s stand up reports and streeter interviews will be posted weekly on CAA Saskatchewan’s YouTube Channel.

Potholes and crumbling pavement remain as the top issues. Several factors can cause deterioration of our roads - everything from weather conditions, age of the roads, heavy traffic, and lack of maintenance. In cold climates like Saskatchewan, the freeze-thaw cycle plays a significant role in creating potholes – a problem that occurs when temperatures regularly go above and below the freezing point. When rain or snow seeps through cracks and openings in the pavement, it freezes and expands, causing the pavement to heave upward. Then as temperatures rise, the ground underneath the pavement returns to its normal level, leaving a cavity or hole which breaks apart with continued use of vehicles driving over the fractured pavement.

Nominations and votes for worst or unsafe roads will continue until April 30th and the top ten worst roads will be announced on May 2, 2022. CAA Worst Roads is an online engagement campaign aimed at drawing attention to our province’s worst, unsafe roads. At the end of the campaign, the top ten roads list is distributed to government and business leaders in hopes of sparking conversation and action. Working towards safer roads for all road users is a priority for CAA Saskatchewan.
